GRAVITY is one of three 2nd generation VLTI instruments selected for a Phase A study (others are VSI and MATISSE).

GRAVITY will coherently combine the light from all 4 ESO VLT 8m Unit Telescopes.

GRAVITY will provide NIR adaptive optics assisted precision narrow-angle astrometry (10 µas) and interferometric phase referenced imaging (4 mas) of faint objects (K≤20mag).

GRAVITY will precisely measure the fringe visibility and phase of the fringe pattern to acquire spatial knowledge of the observed object.

The GRAVITY project strongly matches MPIA's activities in the field of optical interferometry. Other MPIA interferometry projects and instruments are: FRINGE, MIDI, PRIMA, and MATISSE.
