| GRAVITY is one of three 2nd generation VLTI instruments selected for a Phase A study (others are VSI and MATISSE).
GRAVITY will coherently combine the light from all 4 ESO VLT 8m Unit Telescopes.
GRAVITY will provide NIR adaptive optics assisted precision narrow-angle astrometry (10 µas) and interferometric phase referenced imaging (4 mas) of faint objects (K≤20mag).
The GRAVITY project strongly matches MPIA's activities in the field of optical interferometry. Other MPIA interferometry projects and instruments are: FRINGE, MIDI, PRIMA, and MATISSE.GRAVITY will precisely measure the fringe visibility and phase of the fringe pattern to acquire spatial knowledge of the observed object. |
