Interstellar medium / laboratory astrophysics
The MPIA runs a small laboratory astrophysics facility at the University of Jena headed by F. Huisken. This group is part of a joint DFG research group "Laboratory Astrophysics". We are especially interested in the structure of carbonaceous matter in space, the chemistry of protoplanetary disks, and gas phase spectroscopy relevant for the explanation of the diffuse interstellar bands and the infrared PAH bands. We also study nano-meter sized silicon particles which may serve as an explanation for the Extended Red Emission.
