CMDs and CDM: near field cosmology with the Local Group of galaxies

Abstract:

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in the nearby galaxies of the Local Group as substructure and dwarf galaxies continue to be discovered. Observations of nearby galaxies provide some of the most detailed insight into the processes of galaxy formation and evolution available. In this talk, I discuss some recent results and discoveries for Local Group galaxies, and show how these are causing us to change our perceptions of even the simplest galaxies in the Universe.
