4 July 2016. 39h VLT time granted to Knud Jahnke in Period 98 to study triggering of the highest accretion rates in local black holes.

15 Oct 2015. New paper out: Do the Most Massive Black Holes at z=2 Grow via Major Mergers?.

25 June 2015. Yay: 21 orbits with HST granted to Knud Jahnke, to test whether galaxy mergers are triggering the highest accretion rates in black holes at z=2.

May 2015. Liyualem Ambachew succesfully finished her Master thesis. Paper is in preparation.

18 Sep 2013. Two new members will join the group in fall. Postdoc Matt Mechtley will join in 11/2013 and master student Liyualem Ambachew a month later.

15 Aug 2013. Paper accepted by Robert Singh on "The nature of LINER galaxies: Ubiquitous hot old stars plus rare accreting black holes". Read it! AGN won't be the same.

31 Dec 2012. Radio Feature (german) in the Deutschlandradio on "Das Düstere im Dunkeln. Annäherung an ein Schwarzes Loch" including explanations by K. Jahnke

26 Dec 2012. Again a good year: One graduation (Dading Nugroho), Co-authorship on 11 articles and by now 78 citations for Cisternas, Jahnke+ 2011 and 60 for Jahnke & Maccio 2011.

05 Nov 2012. PostDoc opening in the group to work on a merger-QSO connection at z=2 and the high-mass end of galaxies. Deadline 01 Dec 2012.

31 Oct 2012. The CALIFA survey has its first data release. 100 nearby galaxies observed with the Calar Alto 3.5m instrument PMAS/PPAK. Accopanying paper was accepted the same day!

14 Oct 2012. Our publication on the absence of a merger-AGN connection (Cisternas, Jahnke, Inskip et al. 2011) has racked up an impressive 73 citations by now.

26 June 2012. Featured article and interview on "The bulk of the black hole growth since z ~ 1 occurs in a secular universe: No major merger-AGN connection" featured in ScienceWatch.com.

Fall 2011. Together with Arjen van der Wel we organize the workshop Watching Galaxies Grow Up, from Dec 4.-9. at Ringberg Castle in Bavaria.

November 2011. Our group member Mauricio Cisternas successfully defended his thesis at the Ruperto Carola and will move to the IAC on Tenerife by early 2012.

20 Oct 2011. It is time to introduce our new group member, Robert Singh, who came to us already in August for a PhD project jointly supervised by Knud and Glenn van de Ven on the topic of "The true nature of LINERs" using data from the CALIFA survey.

12 Oct 2011. Our group member Rene Andrae successfully defended his thesis on the "Alignments of Disc Galaxies" at the Ruperto Carola University of Heidelberg. Rene moves on to postdoctoral research in the Gaia group headed by Coryn Bailer-Jones, also at MPIA.
