Evolution of Herbig Ae/Be stars seen by CO fundamental band spectroscopy

Abstract:
The disk atmosphere is the basic element of any disk models we use to understand a protoplanetary disk today. Disk atmosphere is also a sensitive indicator of the disk evolution, as a protoplanetary disk transforms itself from a flared to a flat disk. The direct observations of disk atmosphere is, however, challenging, because the emission from the disk is usually dominated by the warm gas near the disk inner-rim. Here we report spatially resolved CO fundamental band spectroscopy by CRIRES/VLT at 4.7 μm. We discuss the measured inner radii of the gas disks and the power-law indices of the emission from the disk atmosphere of the sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars, and possible evolutionary path how to put them in a context.
