Pebble formation by ice condensation

Abstract:
The formation of pebbles in protoplanetary discs is an important step towards the formation of planetesimals and planets. These centimeter-sized particles can be observed in discs, but the growth from dust to pebbles and beyond is not yet completely understood, as coagulation is inefficient for such large particles. Close to ice lines dust growth can however proceed both by coagulation of sticky ice particles and by condensation. We have numerically investigated particle growth in an idealized condensation scenario close to the water ice line at around 3 AU, and find growth to centimeter-sized pebbles on a timescale of 10 000 years in a turbulent disc. The resulting particles are large enough to grow further into planetesimals and planets through dynamical instabilities, such as the streaming instability, and through pebble accretion.
