Global Models of Planetary System Formation

Coleman, Gavin (Queen Mary, University of London)

Abstract:
The question of how the broad diversity of observed multiple planet systems form still remains largely unanswered. In this poster we will present the results of recent N-body simulations, coupled to a 1D thermally evolving viscous disc model, to explore how various processes such as migration (types I and II), gas accretion and planet-planet interactions affect planetary system formation. Our results provide a broad range of outcomes, including systems of short-period super-Earths and Neptune-like planets, giant planets that accrete significant gaseous envelopes and undergo type II migration, and systems that consist only of low-mass terrestrial-like bodies left over as “debris” after more massive planets have formed and migrated into the central star. We will compare our results with observations and describe future developments of our model.
