Scope of the School:

The goals of the IMPRS Summer Schools are to:
- bring together research students of various fields for discussion and exchange of ideas;
- encourage young researchers and advanced students to continue research in these fields; and
- strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas;

The topic of this year's school, Statistical Inferences from Astrophysical Data, is of essential interest for almost all astronomical and astrophysical projects. Examples are huge dates sets from large-scale surveys, similar imformation from corresponding numerical simulations, the limit of sparse data coverage in time or space, incomplete data, the searching for periodicities in (unevenly) sampled data ...

Topics to be covered by the main lecturers will include

  • Approaches to hypothesis testing, parameter testing
  • Modeling, testing, estimating in astrophysics
  • The time domain, multi-epoch data, red noise

Further topics will be Monte Carlo approaches, maximum likelyhood techniques, parametric tests, biases in censored/incomplete data, or Bayesian statistics applications.

School format:

The IMPRS Summer School has four major components:

(1) The lecturing program on general issues of Statistical Inferences is taught by our invited lecturers David W. Hogg, Ian McHardy, and William H. Press.
(2) A few presentations on specific scientific applications will be given by scientists from Heidelberg institutes.
(3) Lab exercises. Note, that in order to be prepared for these exercises it is required to bring your own laptop and to install certain software packages prior to the school. Please, check the following link-1 and link-2 to prepare yourself and your computer for the school. The lab exercises will be assisted by Jo Bovy (New York University), Dimitrios Emmanoulopoulos (University of Southampton), and Dustin Lang (University of Toronto).
(4) A social program intended to provide a pleasent and relaxed atmosphere for fruitful scientific discussion between all participants.

We do not have a regular poster session, but we will provide space for posters of participants. There will be time during the coffee breaks to look at the posters.

Please, download the preliminary program of the school (as of August 8, 2009).

Registration:

** Registration for the IMPRS Summer School closes at June 15th **

There is no registration fee.

The number of participants is limited. We will not be able to accept all registrations applying for participation. Preference will given to students or postdocs working in the field and registering early.

1) The first step in the registration procedure is to fill out the registration form, then print it, sign it, and send it to us preferably as scanned pdf by email (however fax or postal mail is possible as well). With your signature you will state that in order to be prepared for the practical exercises, you will bring your own laptop and that you have installed and tested certain software packages prior to the school.

2) The second step is that we evaluate the incoming registrations (as we are usually oversubscribed). By the end of June at the latest you will be informed whether you may attend the IMPRS Summer School 2009.

3) You may then go ahead and take care of your accomodation (see below) either by booking yourself or via IMPRS by filling out the accomodation form.

4) In order to be prepared for successful participation at the lab exercises it is required to bring your own laptop and to install certain software packages prior to the school. We will prepare a local Wiki page with more information and advice soon (access will be provided after registration and acceptance).

Please note that after having received this official confirmation and after having booked your accommodation, a cancellation will be difficult and you will have to cover all the costs which may incur.

We urge you to register and book your hotel as early as possible.

Registration is essential as it necessary in order to schedule the scientific and social program. Please, tell us immediately if you have a problem with our registration schedule (e.g. if you have to apply for other funding).

Please understand that for student and postdoc applications we request for the signature of a staff scientist on th eapplication form.

Here is the current list of participants (as of August 8) who have been accepted to the school and have confirmed their participation.

Travel & arrival:

The IMPRS Summer School will start Monday morning (August 10) and end on Friday afternoon (August 14).

PLANE arrivals: If you arrive by airplane, there are the following options:

Frankfurt/Main (FRA): The easiest is to take the (direct) airport bus to Heidelberg which runs every hour. The bus is labeled "Lufthansa bus" but is currently run by a different company. The bus leaves very close to the exit gate B at Frankfurt airport. This link this link provide further information for reservations. Note that a reservation (3 days in advance) is highly recommended as the "bus" is actually a van with 9 seats only. The bus arrives very close to downtown Heidelberg, about 200 m away from the central bus station "Bismarck-Platz". There are also frequent train connections from the airport via Mannheim to Heidelberg (main station).

Frankfurt/Hahn (HHN): Many low-cost arrive at Frankfurt/Hahn. There is a direct airport bus to Heidelberg as well, however, arriving at Heidelberg main station. (Be aware that in spite of its name this airport is not close to Frankfurt!).

TRAIN arrivals: Trains will arrive at Heidelberg main station ("Hauptbahnhof"), about 500 m away from either downtown Heidelberg of the Max-Planck-Haus.
If you like to go downtown, you may take the tram (line 1) direction downtown Heidelberg (direction "Bismark-Platz" which is the central bus stop).

After arrival in Heidelberg, it will be convienient for you to buy a weekly pass for the Heidelberg public transportation system ("Wochenticket", 18,50 Euro). It is valid from Monday 00:00 till next Monday 12:00.

Hotel IBIS is located just besides the main station. If you arrive by the Lufthansa bus, take a tram or a bus to the main station. The trams leave 100m from the Lufthansa bus stop.

If you stay at the Max Planck Guesthouse at the conference center, you may take the trams 24 or 21 from the main station direction "Handschuhsheim" to stop "Jahnstrasse", or tram 21 or bus 32 from the main bus stop at "Bismarckplatz" direction "Handschuhsheim" to stop "Jahnstrasse". From stop "Jahnstrasse" it is a 100m walk to the guest house (along the tram tracks). Note that the guest house is in the same building as the conference center, however, it has another entrance (around the corner).

The following schematic map shows the public transport system in Heidelberg (provided by the Heidelberg area public transportation system RNV, http://www.rnv-online.de/).

Please, check the google map to find your way from main station to the conference center at "Gerhart-Hauptmannstrasse 36". The guest house entrance is around the corner at "Humboldtstrasse 13". Note that the map is not exact ...
