Besides the yearly course program for graduate studies in astronomy
and astrophysics, IMPRS-HD is organizing an
annual Summer School on up-to-date scientific topics.
Internationally renowned scientists are invited as lecturers.

The goals of the IMPRS Summer Schools are to:
- bring together research students of various fields for discussion and exchange of ideas;
- encourage young researchers and advanced students to continue research in these fields; and
- strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas;
The school aims at giving a comprehensive overview over our current
understanding of the formation of the first and second generation of
stars in the universe and the build-up of the first galaxies.
It addresses the process of reionization, its physical origin and
evolution in time, and current and future observations that help to
gain deeper insight into this important epoch of cosmic evolution.

|
The IMPRS Summer School has three major components:
(1)
The lecturing program on general issues is taught by our invited lecturers
Volker Bromm, Naoki Yoshida, Andrea Ferrara, and Saleem Zaroubi.
(2)
A few presentations on specific scientific applications will be given
by scientists from Heidelberg institutes.
(3)
A social program intended to provide a pleasent and relaxed atmosphere for
fruitful scientific discussion between all participants.
Please, download the
program of the school (as of September 4, 2010).

The IMPRS Summer School will start Monday morning (September 6) and end on
Friday afternoon (September 10).
PLANE arrivals:
If you arrive by airplane, there are the following options:
Frankfurt/Main (FRA): The easiest is to take the (direct) airport bus to
Heidelberg which runs every hour.
The bus is labeled "Lufthansa bus" but is currently run by a different company.
The bus leaves very close to the exit gate B at Frankfurt airport. This
link this
link
provide further information for reservations. Note that a reservation
(3 days in advance) is highly recommended as the "bus" is actually
a van with 9 seats only.
The bus arrives very close to downtown Heidelberg, about 200 m away from
the central bus station "Bismarck-Platz".
There are also frequent train connections from the airport via
Mannheim to Heidelberg (main station).
Frankfurt/Hahn (HHN): Many low-cost arrive at
Frankfurt/Hahn.
There is a direct airport bus to Heidelberg as well, however, arriving at
Heidelberg main station. (Be aware that in spite of its name this airport
is not close to Frankfurt!).
TRAIN arrivals:
Trains will arrive at Heidelberg main station ("Hauptbahnhof"), about
500 m away from either downtown Heidelberg of the Max-Planck-Haus.
If you like to go downtown, you may take the tram (line 1) direction
downtown Heidelberg (direction "Bismark-Platz" which is the central
bus stop).

Steffi's Hostel
is located 100m north of main station. Enter the big shopping
mall (outdoor equipment) north of the train station. Pass it to
the north, leave it and go 50m to a big brick stone building
(old factory). The hostel is located there.

Heidelberg has a fairly good public transportation system.
You may buy a weekly ticket after arrival in Heidelberg and
use it for the following days ("Wochenticket Jedermann", 19 Euro).
It is valid from Monday 00:00 till next Monday 12:00.
If you stay in the guestrooms close to the conference center, you
may consider NOT to buy such a ticket, as you may walk to
downtown Heidelberg within 15 min.
You can buy the weekly pass in the "RNV service center" (RNV Verkaufsstelle)
in the main station.
The following
schematic map
explains the public transport system in Heidelberg
(provided by the Heidelberg area public transportation
system RNV, http://www.rnv-online.de/).
The IBIS hotel and Steffi's Hostel are connected to the conference center
(stops "Jahnstrasse" of Bunsengymnasium") by tram lines 21 and 24 and bus line 32.
Each of the lines goes every then minutes during the week.
You may check
