Postdoc Positions in the Galaxies and Cosmology Department of the MPIA (#331)
We anticipate to fill the following postdoc and fellowship positions with starting dates by Autumn 2022, under the corresponding job ad listed at the AAS job register (see here),

Independent MPIA research fellowship position:
a) Independent post-doctoral research fellowship position.
We seek candidates to conduct excellent independent research related to one or more of the research areas covered by the various research groups in the Galaxies and Cosmology Department.
Post-doc positions in MPIA research groups:
b) Two post-docs to work in the ERC/Lise Meitner group of Dr. Maria Bergemann.
The applicants will strengthen the group's main research directions: 3D Non-LTE spectral modeling, fundamental stellar parameters, and exploitation of 4MOST and WEAVE survey data. The focus of the ERC grant is on studies of trans-iron elements and nucleosynthesis in supernovae and compact binary mergers. The Lise Meitner grant supports activities related to the exploitation of observational datasets from various facilities, including TESS, VLT, JWST, and the development of novel diagnostic techniques for stellar astrophysics. We also welcome applications from researchers with interest in using stellar data in other areas, including exoplanet studies or galaxy evolution. Please note: these positions will also be advertised seperatetely. You will be considered for these positions if you apply for either advertisement.
c) One post-doc position in the Galactic Nuclei Group with Dr. Nadine Neumayer on the build-up of galactic centres and the role of black holes.
The research will focus on observational studies of galactic nuclei, to understand their star formation history, chemical enrichment as well as the link to the dynamics of stars (and gas). The ideal candidate would have significant experience in stellar population and/or structural analysis of galaxies. Expertise in reduction of imaging and spectroscopy data is desired. Knowledge of dynamical modelling methods is a valuable asset.
d) One post-doc position in the Interstellar Medium group of Dr. Fabian Walter.
We are looking for a postdoc who is interested in radio interferometric studies of galaxies. Walter is Co-PI of the 1800 hour Local Group L-Band Survey that is currently executed at the Very Large Array (LGLBS), and is Co-I on the ongoing MeerKAT's Large Survey Projects LADUMA and MHONGOOSE. The group is also actively involved in the next generation of radio facilities in the Northern Hemisphere: the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) and the DSA-2000 radio camera. Candidates interested in any of these projects are encouraged to apply. Background in radio interferometric data reduction and imaging would be an asset, though not a requirement.
e) One postdoc in the jet theory group of
Prof. Dr. Christian Fendt.
We are looking for a postdoc who is interested in (GR-)MHD simulations of jet launching and related modeling of particle acceleration
and radiation features. The project is in connection with the theory group at Wuerzburg University (Prof. Karl Mannheim), who will apply our simulated jet dynamics to improve high energy radiation modeling of AGN jets. Experience in MHD modeling and GR-MHD is essential. The project plans to apply the codes PLUTO and HARM.
f) One postdoc in the Extragalactic Star Formation group of Dr. Eva Schinnerer.
We anticipate to offer a 2+1 year postdoctoral position in the Extragalactic Starformation group focused on the scientific exploitation of the datasets assembled by the PHANGS collaboration which include high quality ALMA, VLT/MUSE, HST, VLA, and soon JWST imaging observations of nearby massive galaxies on the star-forming main sequence. Candidates with expertise in any aspects related to understanding the star formation process utilising (sub-)millimeter observations, optical spectroscopic data, high-resolution imaging data and/or radio continuum are strongly encouraged to apply.
g) One postdoc position in the high-z quasars group of Dr. Eduardo Bañados.
We are looking for a postdoc interested in the search and characterization of the most distant quasars. The candidate would be involved in developing the best strategies for quasar search in the era of Euclid/VRO-LSST and/or in the analysis of approved JWST cycle 1 programs. Although not a strict requirement, the ideal candidate would have experience working with large databases and leading observing runs. Experience with reduction and analysis of near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy is desired.
