The path from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) leads through a series of technical and scientific advances. One of these is the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph (METIS), a tool specifically designed to capture light in the mid-infrared range.
