The engineering design department produces the mechanical designs of astronomical instruments built by MPIA, with a focus on the creation of CAD models of instruments as well as of technical drawings.

Our staff also supports the subsequent construction processes for the instruments, such as manufacture, testing, installation, and commissioning. Computer simulations can be used to study both the behaviour of design-critical components under stress as well as an instrument's thermal properties.

Where design and/or manufacture services are provided by external companies on the basis of industry contracts, our department is responsible for managing the interactions with these companies, monitor their work, and decide on the final acceptance of the finished product.
