Galaxies bear witness to an impressive variety of structures, such as bars, rings, spiral arms or ellipsoids. These develop in the course of evolution from originally lumpy, irregular galaxies in the early universe. In this talk, I will introduce you to the evolution and significance of these structures, with a special focus on barred galaxies and their fundamental role in the internal evolution of galaxies.
