the wave-front sensor for the METIS instrument

CAD model of the wave-front sensor for the ELT Instrument METIS. 

To correct for atmospheric turbulence, the METIS instrument installed on the ELT will use its own wavefront sensor. This sensor is being developed, built, and commissioned at MPIA.

The image shows a subassembly within the wavefront sensor. This subassembly holds a folding mirror and a group of three lenses. 
To test the wave-front sensor under operating conditions, it will be installed in a specially developed and built test cryostat. This test cryostat was developed at MPIA. It can reach temperatures of          70 K   (-203°C).
