Otto Hahn Medal for Eduardo Banados

September 16, 2016
Dr. Eduardo Enrique Bañados Torres has been awarded with the Otto Hahn Medal from the Max Planck Society (MPG). With the ceremony during the annual meeting of the MPG, the society recognized his work for the understanding of quasars in the early universe.

With the award of the Otto Hahn Medal - named after the famous German chemist and Nobel laureate - the Max Planck Society honors yearly some of their outstanding young researchers. At the annual meeting of the MPG 2016 in Saarbrücken, Germany, Eduardo Bañados was recently honored as one of 12 scientists from the Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section of the MPG.

Eduardo Bañados conducted his PhD in Heidelberg and worked at MPIA until the end of 2015. Then he moved as postdoctoral fellow to the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena / California (USA), where he currently continues his research in the field of observational cosmology.

In his research, Bañados deals with matters related to the formation of the first stars, galaxies, supermassive black holes and the large-scale structure in the universe. Particularly, the study of Quasars – which are the active centers of galaxies at high redshift - plays an important role for understanding formation processes in the early Universe and the cosmological evolution. The Max-Planck-society honors Eduardo Banados “for groundbreaking studies regarding the characterization of quasars in the very early universe."
