Open Day 2015


Several thousand visitors came again to the Open Day on 21st June 2015 to find out about the current activities at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and the House of Astronomy. The videos and pictures give an impression of the different stations around research, technology, outreach and education.

In the precision engineering department, the visitors received information on how astronomical instrumentation is manufactured there with the most modern tools. They also learned that apprentices are trained there.

Astronomers and technicians explained some principles of observing with telescopes. In this example, we see a demonstration experiment to illustrate the interference of waves.

At this station, the guests learned hands-on that light can be split into its colour components by various processes. This phenomenon is the basis for the function of spectrographs.

Talks

Visitors were able to find out about research at the MPIA in various short presentations. MPIA scientists explained their research projects and were available for questions and discussions.

Haus der Astronomie

The Haus der Astronomie informed the guests about the activities in astronomical education and public relations. The visitors were given an insight into the methodologies and educational materials. A children's programme offered children an insight into the fantastic aspects of the universe.

Planetarium

In the auditorium of the Haus der Astronomie, special lectures conveyed the didactic work. The planetarium also invited visitors to take virtual journeys through the universe.
