Enabling ELT: Two Technologies that Make It All Possible
In a very few years, European astronomers will begin using the 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). This facility represents a quantum leap in collecting area and spatial resolution, and it will likely spark a revolution in our understanding of the Universe. Two critical technologies, Mirror Segmentation and Adaptive Optics, are at the heart of this breakthrough. In this talk, I will outline how we got here in terms of large telescopes and explain the how’s and why’s of these two essential innovations.
