Prehistoric humans still looked at the sky with the naked eye. It was Galileo's refracting telescope that made previously unknown details visible. Since then, an unstoppable technological development has taken place, thanks to which we can examine the night sky ever more closely. Tom Herbst tells a brief history of astronomical telescopes and presents in detail the gigantic project of the European Southern Observatory on Chile's Cerro Armazones: the European Extremely Large Telescope.
